Organ Donation guide

Processing the death of your loved one takes a lot of time. As professionals, we have often seen how hard it hits people. People are unique - everyone takes their own time, their own way of healing. However, all of us can agree that it is incredibly difficult to replace the dear one who has left us, with all of their charm, humour, wit, uniqueness and more.

Organ donation is a novel method. In simple terms, it is a way of donating a person’s organs or any form of living tissue to another person, in order to save their lives. In India, the whole organ donation process after death is managed by the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO).

In order to become an organ donor after death, here is what one has to do in India:

  1. The organ donor will have to register with NOTTO. This can be done either online or at a designated NOTTO registration centre.

  2. The organ donor will also be asked to carry an organ donor card with you at all times.

  3. In addition, organ donor has to make it known that they wish to donate their organs to those who are in need. This is an essential step because the family will also be asked for their consent once the organ donor is in a position to donate.

  4. If the person you know wants to donate their organs is in the hospital, talk to the doctors about their wish to donate. This will help ease the process.

In India, when a person passes away in a hospital, there will be a team of doctors who will examine the body and will clear it for organ donation only if they deem it to be fine. Else, they will cancel the organ donation procedure.

Once they have examined the body, the family will be asked to provide its consent. All of this is done very quickly because the organ donation procedure has to be completed within 24 hours for better results.

For the organ donor, blessing the other person with a second chance at life is like blessing the other person. And for the person who receives the organ, it is nothing short of a blessing either, since they are being given the gift of life by another person for nothing in return.

At Tukaram Parivar Antim Sanskar Seva, it gives us immense pleasure that we are in a line of work where we get to honour people and their lives by performing their last rites with utmost respect and devotion.
